The Afterschool Art Studio is an eight-session program designed to introduce students to a variety of artistic mediums, including printmaking, sculpture, and textiles. Each week, students will engage in a new hands-on project, building a diverse set of creative skills and a portfolio of unique art pieces.

There are 7 spaces available for this program.

Session 1: Lino Printmaking

Ready to become a printmaker? In this session, you’ll learn the ancient art of block printing! We'll start with a simple design, then use special carving tools to carefully etch your image into a linoleum block. After that, we’ll ink up your creation and press it onto paper, revealing a bold and beautiful print that you can make again and again.

Session 2: Paper Mache, Part 1 (Building)

This is where the magic begins! You’ll get your hands messy as you build a one-of-a-kind 3D sculpture from scratch. We’ll use everyday materials like newspaper and masking tape to build the basic shape, then get to the fun part: dipping strips of paper in a special paste and layering them over your form. By the end of this session, your sculpture will be ready to dry and wait for its colourful transformation.

Session 3: Paper Mache, Part 2 (Finishing & Painting)

It's time to bring your paper mache sculpture to life! In this session, we'll turn your rough form into a finished masterpiece. You'll learn to prime your piece to create a smooth, paintable surface, then unleash your creativity with a vibrant palette of acrylic paints. You'll add all the details and personality to make your sculpture truly unique.

Session 4: Make Your Own Zine

Have you ever wanted to be a publisher? In this class, you'll create a miniature magazine, or "zine," that's all your own. Using a single sheet of paper, you’ll learn a simple folding trick to create an 8-page booklet. Then, you'll fill each page with your own drawings, comics, poems, or stories, creating a small work of art you can share with friends.

Session 5: Weaving

Explore the wonderful world of textiles in this hands-on weaving session. We'll start with a simple cardboard loom, which you'll wrap with yarn to create the base threads. Then, you'll get to choose from a variety of colourful yarns and learn the classic "over-under" technique to weave a beautiful mini-tapestry.

Session 6: Oil Pastels

Dive into the vibrant, buttery world of oil pastels! In this class, you'll learn how to blend colours directly on the paper to create stunning, painterly effects without the mess of paint. We'll experiment with layering colours, creating texture, and drawing with bold strokes to make your art pop.

Session 7: Book Binding

Ever wanted to make your own sketchbook or journal? This is your chance! We'll teach you the traditional craft of bookbinding. You'll learn a simple but sturdy stitching technique to assemble your own book from scratch, creating a beautiful, blank canvas ready for all your future ideas and drawings.

Session 8: Needle Felting

Discover the magic of sculpting with wool! In this final session, you’ll learn the special technique of needle felting to turn soft wool roving into a cute, three-dimensional creation. We'll use barbed needles to poke and shape the wool, creating a tiny felted friend or object that's all your own.
