Take the next step in your relief printmaking journey with this hands-on, three-week course focused on the jigsaw technique. Designed for printmakers with basic carving experience, this workshop guides you through designing, carving, and printing a multi-colour piece from a single block of easy-carve softoleum (6x8").
Over three weeks, students will refine their precision carving and printing techniques. You will learn to build a custom registration board, manage ink viscosity and tack, pull test proofs, and print finished editions. By the end of the course, you will gain a practical command of jigsaw block preparation and leave with a collection of hand-printed original artwork.
Class 1: Printmaking Techniques & Design (November 4th)
This course will begin by examining the structural differences, advantages, and drawbacks of relief methods, including reduction, multi-block, and jigsaw printing. Students will create their design on paper and transfer the artwork onto the softoleum block.
Class 2: Carving & Registration Boards (November 11th)
We'll focus on carving tips and techniques to achieve your design and to safely carve and separate your jigsaw block. The final half-hour will cover constructing a custom registration board. Unfinished carving can be completed at home before the last session.
Class 3: Inking & Printing (November 18th)
In the final class, we'll explore the mechanics of relief ink (multiple colours), including managing proper consistency, tack, and film thickness. Students will run test proofs to check seam alignment, troubleshoot pressure, and print final editions on specialty papers.
**All materials are included in the cost and students will get to keep a Speedball handle with 3 blades. For this course, we will be using Speedball Block Printing Ink (water-based). Each student will get the following paper for their final editions: Yukyu (washi) 2 sheets of 7x10", Kitakata x 1 (cut down into 4 sheets of 7x10"), and Fabriano Unica 50% Cotton Rag Printmaking paper (cut down into 9 sheets of 7x10").
Suggested age is 18+ as we will be working with sharp tools; however if you feel that you know someone younger who would enjoy this workshop they are welcome to attend.
